The predominant industries in Slieve Bloom are farming and forestry.
The area is dotted with small family farms producing quality milk for creameries which process it into a range of high quality products such a cheese, yoghurt, icecream and chocolate, and cattle and sheep for the meat processing industry.
Trees of all kinds grow here but the mountains’ forests are mainly of commercially grown Sitka Spruce and Lodge pole Pine. There are a number of large timber mills in the area which process the locally grown timber.
A number of the smaller timber mills in the area specialise in producing hurleys (comain)- the crafted stick used in the traditional Irish game of hurling. Hurling thrives in the area and the stick is made from specially selected ash boughs.
Other thriving local small industries include jam making and crafts.
